Academic Writing

Introduction

This Academic Writing module will equip learners with the essential skills needed to write effectively in an academic format. It will help learners understand the importance of referencing, adopting an academic writing style, and avoiding plagiarism.  Additionally, this module will impart skills that offer valuable benefits for the assessment requirements of other modules within this program.

Indicative Syllabus Content

Formal Academic Writing Style

  • Structure; vocabulary; appropriate language

Harvard Referencing System, uses, rules and application

  • Referencing systems; Punctuation citing; Direct quotations (short and long), paraphrasing and summarising; Paraphrasing; Secondary referencing; Reference list

Plagiarism

  • Concept of plagiarism; supporting an argument; using and understanding plagiarism software; interpreting similarity scores

Academic and Business Genres

  • Essays; Reports; Abstracts; Proposals; Curriculum Vitae

Reviewing and Editing Academic Writing

  • Drafting academic work; Purpose of drafting; How editing improves academic argument; strategies for editing academic work

Minimum Intended Learning Outcomes (MIMLOs)

Upon successful completion of this module, the learner should be able to:
MIMLO1
Develop self-editing skills to refine and improve written work for clarity, coherence, and adherence to academic standards.
MIMLO2
Write a Curriculum Vitae and job application letter/email using appropriate academic language and format.
MIMLO3
Master the organization and structure of academic writing, with a short academic essay, comprising proper introduction, body and conclusion and familiarize oneself with the conventions of academic writing, including hedging language, objectivity, formality, register and style.
MIMLO4
Apply the appropriate citation style of the Harvard Referencing System to give credit to sources and avoid plagiarism.
MIMLO5
Develop the ability to critically analyse and evaluate one’s thoughts, actions, and experiences along with enhancing written communication skills to articulate reflections clearly and coherently.

Reassessment Opportunity

Where the combined marks of the assessment and examination do not reach the pass mark the learner will be required to repeat the element of assessment that they failed. Reassessment materials will be published on Moodle after the Examination Board Meeting and will be aligned to the MIMLOs and learners will be capped at 40% unless there are personal mitigating circumstances.

Aims & Objectives

The aims of this Academic Writing  module are to enable the learner to develop the requisite academic skills to support their undertaking of an academic programme. Specifically, this module aims to provide learners with the necessary skills and techniques to write in an academic format and be cognisant of academic form and structure.
