Business Strategy

The indicative syllabus of this module is outlined in the units below:

Purpose of the Company:

    • Direction of a company – vision, mission, objectives, and stated strategy.

External analysis:

    • The business environment;
    • major trends in the business environment;
    • PESTEL analysis;
    • Industry analysis; Competitor analysis.

Internal Analysis:

    • Current strategy of a company;
    • Value Chain analysis;
    • Cost and Financial analysis;

Strategic Choice:

    • Porter’s Generic Strategies;
    • cost leader, differentiator, focus;
    • industry life cycle;
    • strategic decisions; international expansion, diversification, contraction; growth strategies – Ansoff matrix.

Implementation of Strategy:

    • Resources available for strategic decisions;
    • systems and processes to support strategy;
    • organisational culture alignment with strategy;
    • coherency of strategy with business goals. 

Assessing a Strategy:

    • Setting strategic goals;
    • Reviewing the strategic goals;
    • Use of data to continuously review strategy;
    • Recovery tactics for strategic failure;
    • Informing future strategic decisions .

Reassessment Opportunity

Where the combined marks of the assessment and examination do not reach the pass mark the learner will be required to repeat the element of assessment that they failed. Reassessment materials will be published on Moodle after the Examination Board and will be aligned to the MIMLOs and learners will be capped at 40% unless there are personal mitigating circumstances.

Aims & Objectives

The aims of this module are to provide learners with knowledge of strategy concepts and how such concepts can be applied to practical business scenarios.

It will enable learners’ to develop strategic skills through the utilisation of prominent business strategy models and frameworks, focused at the macro-environmental, industry, and company level.
