Network Routing and Switching Module

Introduction Network Routing & Switching

This Network Routing and Switching module builds on stage one and expands and furthers knowledge relating to the architecture, components, and operations of routers and switches in a typical network. Learners will acquire the knowledge and practical skills to configure a router and a switch for basic functionality within an enterprise network.

Minimum Intended Learning Outcomes (MIMLOs)

Upon successful completion of this module, the learner should be able to:
LO1
Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of network routing and switching in an enterprise environment.
LO2
Appraise industry-applicable network standards and principles in enterprise networks.
LO3
Diagnose and troubleshoot data networks with the use of CLI tools and network monitoring tools.
LO4
Configure initial settings on a network routing and Ethernet switching device(s).
LO5
Implement VLANs, static and dynamic routing, DHCP on a router, network address translation (NAT) and access control lists (ACLs) to filter traffic.

Reassessment Opportunity

Where the combined marks of the assessment and examination do not reach the pass mark the learner will be required to repeat the element of assessment that they failed. Reassessment materials will be published on Moodle after the Examination Board Meeting and will be aligned to the MIMLOs and learners will be capped at 40% unless there are personal mitigating circumstances.

Aims & Objectives

This Network Routing and Switching module will ensure learners meet the following objectives:

  • Configure and troubleshoot routers and switches used in networking.
  • Resolve common issues with static routes including, but not limited to RIPv2, VLAN, NAT, ACL, DHCP in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.
  • Perform device discovery, management, and maintenance of a network layer.
