Learning & Communication

Introduction

The Learning and Communication module will enable Learners to communicate messages effectively in all formats and give feedback as intended in an Academic and Business context.   They will also demonstrate the requisite study skills to support their academic studies.

Study Skills and Examination Preparation 

  • Note taking and summarizing techniques: outline, Cornell Method, Mind mapping, Charting Method
  • Reading techniques
  • Learning styles (Neil Fleming's VARK Model)
  • Study strategies: Creating a study plan, revising, memorizing and practicing under exam conditions.
  • Time management
  • Exam strategies, type of exam questions and question wording

Communication Theory

  • Key concepts in the communication process: encoding, decoding, medium, message, context, feedback, noise and redundancy
  • Contemporary theories and models of communication
  • The nature and function of non-verbal communication
  • Forms of non-verbal communication
  • Interpersonal communication and barriers to effective communication

Organizational Communication

  • Theories of Organizational Communication, Internal and External Communication: types. communication agents, channels, potential barriers
  • Barriers and breakdowns in organizational communication
  • Ethics of organizational communication and CSR
  • Group work (roles, leadership, phases of group development, etc.)
  • Conferences and internal meetings. Giving Presentations: goals, structure, preparation, techniques of delivery, audience analysis, audience interaction
  • Meetings and team communication
  • Strategies for managing conflict
  • Cross-cultural issues in teamwork

Report Writing, Research and Job searching

  • Language and style. Academic and Business writing
  • Preparation of an effective Curriculum Vitae and Cover Letter
  • Principles of successful interviews
  • Data Collection Tools: Questionnaires, Creation and Analysis

Reassessment Opportunity

Where the combined marks of the assessment and examination do not reach the pass mark the learner will be required to repeat the element of assessment that they failed. Reassessment materials will be published on Moodle after the Examination Board Meeting and will be aligned to the MIMLOs and learners will be capped at 40% unless there are personal mitigating circumstances.

Objectives

This learning and communication module will facilitate the development of  learning strategies, examination preparation, writing skills, and the use of the referencing systems and organisational communication.  Learners will develop their personal development skills that enable them to work as professionals to lead and sustain business organisations on a national and international basis.
