Employee Relations Module

Introduction

This Employment Relations module will provide learners with an understanding of the importance of employment relations for a business. Maintaining positive relationships with employees can help a business improve productivity and the efficiency of their operations. However, it can often be a function which can consume significant businesses resources due to a mishandling, or misunderstanding, of employee relations.

Indicative Syllabus Content

Employee Relations:

  • The nature and context of the employment relationship; Rights, duties and expectations arising from the psychological contract; Contract of employment and relevant legislation

Employers and Trade Union Organisations:

  • The role and structure of Trade Unions and Employer Organisations; Advantages and Disadvantages of joining such associations; Trends in membership and external forces

Institutions involved in Dispute Resolution:

  • Introduction to the relevant institutional framework; Aims, objectives, structure, function, operation, usage and reform/evolution; Workplace Relations Reforms

Collective Bargaining:

  • The development of the concept of Collective Bargaining; The roles played by Employer Organisations and Trade Unions; Lobbying forces capacity as Social Partners; Labour market segmentation and sex segregation; Labour market flexibility and non-standard forms of work; Trade union and industrial action; Collective bargaining and minimum wage

Relevant workplace legislation and associated trend:

  • Equality legislation, Anti bullying and harassment procedures, Diversity Management.
  • Dismissals and redundancy policy and legislation.
  • Updates in Health and safety legislation.

Training and Skill Development:

  • Employee involvement in organizational decision-making
  • Political, economic, technological, and current social trend e.g. work/life balance, Sustainability, remote workplace, The leaning organisation and engaging employees in the knowledge economy.

Upon successful completion of this module, the learner should be able to:

Critique the role of different actors involved in employee relations; the Government, EU, MNC’s, Trade unions etc.

Compare and contrast the various forms of employee involvement and representation, and employee relations processes and procedures.

Evaluate and apply the theoretical concepts associated with employee relations to practical work-based scenarios.

Reassessment Opportunity

Where the combined marks of the assessment and examination do not reach the pass mark the learner will be required to repeat the element of assessment that they failed. Reassessment materials will be published on Moodle after the Examination Board and will be aligned to the MIMLOs and learners will be capped at 40% unless there are personal mitigating circumstances.
