Business & Society Module

Business & Society

This Business and Society module will provide students with an insight into and appreciation of the relationship between Business and Society in contemporary Europe, including everyday Ireland-related case studies and references. Students will gain an understanding of the social responsibilities and ethical considerations that a business needs to consider and examine the role and impact of government, regulatory structures and the influence of stakeholders. It will explore how topics such as CSR and ESG overlap, often contained within a sustainability policy, and affect an organisation’s business model. The role and impact of technology in Business and Society today, including AI-related influences, and the emerging importance of the Circular Economy, will also be examined.

Indicative Syllabus Content

Business and Society in Contemporary Europe, including everyday Ireland-related case studies.

  • The ever-changing relationship expectations from society
  • The role and impact of government and regulatory structures, plus managing societal expectations
  • The purpose of regulating business, corruption V, ethics, and corporate governance issues

Introduction to stakeholders and their influence – positive and negative

  • Introduction to stakeholders and their influence – positive and negative
  • Value of partnerships in society -- society special interest groups (social, commercial and political) and international influencers (i.e., OECD, WEF, etc.)

Issues and Concerns in Contemporary European Society, including some Ireland examples

  • Ireland’s economic success, Brexit issues, Immigration impact, Societal norms.
  • Volunteerism’s impact on business and society, plus its effects on your future your career
  • Revisiting the historical Co-Operative movement now gaining popularity again in a post-Covid-era society.

An introduction to the transformational role and impact of technology

  • Including A1/data-driven applications in our everyday social and business life - With awareness of implications on our decision-making plus future employment issues

How sustainability and the circular economy can impact a business, its performance and society as a whole

Minimum Intended Learning Outcomes (MIMLOs)

Upon successful completion of this module, the learner should be able to:

Explain how business and society interact over time, being aware that historical perspectives and present-day trends shape this relationship.
MIMLO2
Recognise the complex interplay between businesses and the socio-economic environment, understanding the role of various stakeholders (such as customers, employees, government, communities, investors, etc.) and how their influence impacts a business.
MIMLO3
Identify and articulate potential conflict areas between business activities and different segments of society, which might involve ethical dilemmas, environmental concerns or labour issues. So, a basic knowledge of how work and reward are distributed in society.
MIMLO4
Discuss any significant social issues in contemporary European and Irish society, where businesses can either exacerbate or mitigate these issues, then be able to propose constructive ways for businesses to contribute positively.
MIMLO5
Describe how sustainability and the circular economy can impact a business and its performance, plus how values in society as a whole can impact a business.

Reassessment Opportunity

Where the combined marks of the assessment and examination do not reach the pass mark the learner will be required to repeat the element of assessment that they failed. Reassessment materials will be published on Moodle after the Examination Board Meeting and will be aligned to the MIMLOs and learners will be capped at 40% unless there are personal mitigating circumstances.

Aims & Objectives

The Business and Society module will explore key elements of this relationship, such as governance structures, regulations, and societal interests and concerns that are common in Ireland. Although the focus will largely be on the Irish context, it will also engage in some comparative exploration of these key issues in other countries.
