The International Foundation programme in Engineering and IT provides academic preparation for first year undergraduate entry and it ensures that you meet the academic English language requirements for your chosen degree programme.

Prepare yourself for your postgraduate programme in a leading Higher Education Institute in Ireland.   Those who successfully complete this course will have the opportunity to progress to a degree programmes in the Institutes of Technology or Universities in Ireland.

The aim of this module is to provide learners with mathematical knowledge and skills that will enable them to formulate and solve simple mathematical models used in Science, Engineering and Business.  Use standard functions to model simple situations in Science, Engineering and Business where two variables are related.

Statistics

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to compile, present, interpret and analyse statistical data, with some theoretical understanding of the basic statistical concepts.

Word Processing (Optional)

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to use a word processing application to produce documents in a variety of contexts to a mailable or publishable standard whilst working autonomously and under general direction.

At the end of the module learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate good file management technique, by creating folders, naming and saving documents to relevant folders.
  • Create, analyse and print documents using different formats and layouts.
  • Enhance document creation using clipart, pictures from file and inserting tables.
  • Prepare mail merge data sources, form letters, labels envelopes and letters using mailings mail merge facilities.
  • Complete a practical examination and out of class assignment gaining an overall mark of 50% or higher.

The purpose of the award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to use the internet for communication, research, collaboration, e-Commerce and web authoring in a secure and confidential manner in a range of personal and work contexts

  • Describe the latest trends in the use of communication technologies, security, collaborative technologies, e-Commerce and file sharing.
  • Design, Publish and maintain a simple website/webpage.
  • Produce searchable documents on related topics downloaded and stored into an organised sequence.
  • Demonstrate e-Mail techniques by sending mail with attachments and received e-Mail messages into relevant folders.
  • Understand enterprise software and recommend appropriate methods of connecting to the internet.

Hybrid Learning

Hybrid Learning combines face-to-face instruction with live online learning.    In the context of the coronavirus school re-openings, a hybrid model reduces the number of students in the building, by moving some of the course delivery online.

Dorset College continues to adhere to the government’s guidelines on protective measures required to be in place in order to combat the COVID-19.  These protective measures mean that our classes will now be delivered through a Hybrid model as outlined above.

Entry Requirements

Successfully passed all subjects in the Leaving Certificate/High School exams with an overall High School minimum of 60%/Minimum GPA of 3.0/5.0.

Have passed Mathematics in their High School final exams.

English Language Requirements
Minimum English Language Requirements of B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), or IELTS 5.0, or equivalent. (must be an internationally recognised exam within the past 2 years)

A combination of module appropriate assessment methods will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes on the course including examinations, group work, presentations and Assignments.

 Academic Progression
Foundation in Engineering & IT course graduates are eligible for consideration for academic progression routes into Universities and Institutes of Technology in Ireland as follows:

    • Upon successful completion of the International Foundation programme (and meeting the conditions of their undergraduate offer), the final results are sent to the relevant 3rd level College/University.
    •  A Full Offer is requested from said 3rd levels and issued to the student.
