We feel very proud of all the Dorset College Dublin Wellbeing Ambassadors today and our amazing Student Experience Lead, Kate Molloy. They made this video to remind us all that we can still support each other, even when we are apart.

We were thrilled to have talk on Tuesday with a representative from Continuous Software, organised by our amazing Lecturer, Erika Volodko.
This was done for her Front-end web dev class with the IIM students. Our special guest covered some information about the company and overall working in IT industry. The students have also been given an exciting opportunity for an internship with this company if they were interested.
In the next following weeks, Erika will hold a virtual Webathon event for our students where We can't wait to share more snapshots with you.
At Dorset College we understand the stress and pressure our Learners are feeling at this moment. We know that it can be difficult to reach out to those around us, even if it’s just to have a chat about our worries.
This is why we have created the Virtual Drop-In service. A free and confidential hour per week that leaners can ‘Drop-In’ to have a talk and express how they are feeling. If you would like to avail of this service contact Kate Molly Student Experience Lead [email protected] to book your spot.
As we know 2020 and 2021 to-date has been a difficult and trying year for everyone, in particular our international learners. With this in mind Dorset College has created the Holiday Helper programme to support our learners over the winter break.
We are aware that many cannot travel home due to Covid-19 restrictions, however this doesn’t mean that anyone needs to be alone or isolated during this time of year.
We have reached out to our wonderful Dorset College learners to sign up to participate. This can take on the form of starting a WhatsApps group chat, going on a socially distanced walk or coffee.
This is open to all of our Dorset College Learners, please contact Kate Molloy Student Experience Lead to take part.

Tell Us about yourself
Hi, my name is Ibeth Diaz Tapia, and I am from Bolivia. I live in Dublin for almost 2 years and nowadays, I am an International Business student at Dorset College.
How did you come with the idea of these two videos?
Kate Molloy, Our Student Experience Lead and Dorset Wellbeing Ambassador Organizer encouraged us to share this new social initiative on our social media. I like to spend my free time on my hobbies: photography, movie editing, and being outdoors. Thus, I asked my friends for help and as a result, more ideas came up. My aim was to generate positive emotions and demonstrate that we can reach these through every day in small things.
What wellness is so important today?
Wellness matters because it is an active individual pursuit of being healthy in body and mind. Every action and emotion relates to our state of wellbeing. This affects our actions and emotions and therefore we influence the people around us. The physical, social, and cultural environments in which we live can be influenced but Wellbeing is up to us, we are responsible for our own choices, behaviours, and everyday life each moment. When we feel content and happy, we share positiveness, and it helps to reduce stress and anxiety improving our physical and mental health.
Any advice for our students?
It is ok not to be ok, but you can choose how long you want to be there. I recommend focusing on what matters and on what is good, on all the positive things that you have done and what you have now, live in the present because this moment will not come back. Work on yourself every day to reach your goals, do not give up. You will be closer than yesterday. If you feel anxious you can take a break or try to connect with others, it will boost your wellbeing but helping people has an even stronger impact because you will feel your purpose in this life.
How do you think Dorset is supporting students regarding this matter?
Covid-19 impacts the way we study, the way we should learn. Dorset College has been taking care about each detail since the beginning. There are social activities every week, class representatives in each group, there is a Wellbeing Ambassador team to encourage students to look for more mindful approaches to living life and also, there is a counsel that we can contact to help us in this challenging time.
Would you like to add something?
I really appreciate the opportunity that Dorset gave me. And I would like to invite my classmates to participate in the weekly activities that the school organises.
Dorset College is delighted to welcome our students back to campus in September and we will be delivering our modules in a combination of hybrid and online classes in line with Public Health Guidelines. Watch the video to understand how we will run our HYBRID classes.
All on-campus activities will resume in September such as classes, laboratories and social activities. If any learner cannot attend in-person classes for any reason such as an underlying health condition please contact our Covid-19 Officer(s):

We want to create a safe space to Network with industry professionals. Where learners can individually showcase their skills that develop throughout this project. The success of this piece will have a continued effect on the success of networking opportunities going forward.

We had our first Dorset College Wellbeing Ambassador meeting yesterday evening. This initiative will focus on establishing positive self-care practices, long-term personal development, and making connections with local charities.
'I am so excited to work with our wonderful Wellbeing Ambassadors this year!' Kate Molloy, Dorset Student Experience Lead
Dorset College Wellbeing Ambassadors is an exciting new social initiative that encourages our learners to pursue more mindful approaches to life. We will focus on establishing positive self-care practices, long-term personal development and making connections with local charities.
The Covid-19 crisis has been an extremely difficult period for many of us, this initiative aims to create a supportive environment to share thoughts and ideas for our collective future.
The programme will run a series of talks and workshops that will help our Ambassadors understand the importance of good mental and physical health from those in the industry. By establishing a worth-while open dialogue, we can undertake honest self-development.
For the year 2020 we have chosen to support Aware as our charity. Aware provides information, education and support for people who experience depression or bipolar disorder and their relatives.
Any student that is interested in participating please contact Kate Molloy our Student Experience Leader to learn how to get involved.

In an exclusive conversation with Peter Sonderegger, he expresses what he considers are the key points to keep in mind for a breakthrough in Business Innovation.
Peter Sonderegger is a Swiss entrepreneur, co-founder of Strategyzer, makers of the Business Model Canvas and the Value Preposition Model that many Universities and College teach today.
During the session, he told us that putting the famous Canvas Model to work was a real challenge, since the initial idea of Alexander Osterwalder was to show a framework for computer students.
Peter mentioned the act of listening and open up yourself to criticism can be a complicated process, but it is what will allow us to 'transform'. He added, 'you should not always be in love with the first idea, you should be open and receptive'.
Definitively a new motivating talk with a person passionate about creating and giving solutions to specific problems. We hope to hear from you again soon!

Undoubtedly a pioneer who was an inspiration for many other women in her role as Lieutenant Commander in 1998. Despite her success in the sailing world, the beginning wasn´t easy. In her words, even nowadays, the participation of women in the armed forces is growing but it is still low and “sometimes it is difficult to find your place in a man´s world”
Among one of his greatest feats was when she was second-in-command onboard the LÉ Niamh as they carried out an operation that was the second-largest anti-drugs haul in Irish history. The crew intercepted a yacht smuggling € 750m worth of cocaine, 120km off the Kerry coast in November 2008. But it´s not only work, on a personal level, the LÉ Aoife gave Marie also great satisfaction, as she met her husband whom she would marry years later.
Marie Gleeson honed her leadership style over many years in the course of a military career in the Irish coasts. The cornerstone of a military career is that service comes before self and this was the reality for Marie in her career. Marie's personal story highlights the importance of support and resilience in the face of adversity. Leadership is something that develops over time. Through learning and experience we should consider the leadership style that we would like to develop and become that person we want to be. Based on her experience leading teams, Marie believes that teamwork and trust are essential for achieving objectives. She also indicated the importance of actively encouraging and motivating staff so that each one of them does their best. A true story that inspires us and invites us to dream and fight for our dreams no matter the difficulties.

We chat with Erika Volodko about the challenge that she did for her students for Front-end Web Development module BSc 2, where they were asked to develop an online web resume which represented them as individuals and the type of work that they are interested in doing in the field.
What was the challenge about?
Creating and deploying an interactive web resume that incorporates clean, intuitive and responsive user interface that follows design standards.
Primarily the focus was on design, the layout, colour scheme and use of UI/UX principles of designing a user-friendly navigational flow, putting a more thorough thought into the placement of various elements and how those elements can make the page look more interesting/alive giving the website a "personality".
What technology was used in this particular project?
All students are at different levels when it comes to design, so they had their own individual input on the overall project. In regards to the technology required for developing their web resumes, we covered the standard front-end stack: HTML, CSS and JavaScript as well as newer versions of HTML5 and CSS3.
In the last few weeks of the semester we also covered how JavaScript can be used to edit various HTML elements and providing the overall interactivity to the project. Lastly, we also covered React which is a JavaScript library used for building user interfaces. React was developed by Facebook and is used by many popular companies such as Netlifx, Instagram, Facebook of course, Reddit, Dropbox and many more.
Some students used React to develop their projects such as Pablo Patrick Gomes Da Silva, who has exceptional skills

The project was a chance for the students to display all of their projects in one place and use the web resume for employment purposes. These type of websites are quite popular in this field as the employer gets a view of the student's abilities, work experience, motivations, and general character. I've had a couple of students message me about using this CA project for these exact reasons which is fantastic!
During the lock-down, the students were informed that the best web resume would win a small trophy for their efforts in a way to motivate them and give them confidence in applying for jobs. After I graded all the projects, I made a small announcement video of the winners.
What was the result?
Throughout the assignment period, students had difficulties with implementing certain features due to using new technologies. Assistance was provided online through a popular communication platform called "Slack" where students submitted their code snippets or sent their Gitpod (online IDE) workspace which can be accessed online and updated simultaneously with the student. Explanation videos of the changes were communicated and the student was able to then work on further features.
What did surprise you the most?
Most surprises came from the final work that was submitted. The standard of the projects was exceptional with a high quality evident within these projects. From the start of the semester for this module until the end, it was clear how much the students have grown and learned with many going out of their way to do their own research.
What can you tell us about the winners project?
There were many projects that have deserved the award, however, the chosen winners were primarily based on their projects as well as their personal skills showcased during the module period.
Lucas for example submitted an exceptional project that showcases keen attention to detail and professionalism which also demonstrates his prior experience within the field. His project meets all of the requirements of the assignment as well as going "above-and-beyond" with various interactions, unique design and appearance of the web resume as well as clean and consistent code.
William on the other hand demonstrated hard work whilst developing a layout and styling that doesn't use a framework. He put in his full personal input into the project. Throughout the year William has made consistent progress in his work and this assignment was a large step ahead from the previous work that he has demonstrated early on in the semester.
